letters and soundsphonics bloom

At Birchen Coppice Academy, we follow ‘Letters and Sounds’. Through high quality, interactive phonics sessions we aim for children to be able to blend and segment words with confidence. This is taught synthetically and progressively so that children have a good understanding of the phonics code and how to apply it when reading and writing. In Early Years and Key Stage One phonics is taught daily as part of a broad and balanced curriculum.

Early Reading

We believe in the importance of developing reading through high quality texts. We give our children a range of carefully balanced and structured books that progressively develop a range of reading skills and promote reading for pleasure.

We recognise the importance of phonics to ensure that pupils can read independently and with confidence. Our ‘early readers’ are banded in sequential phases linked to the Letters and Sound Programme so that children can practise and apply the sounds they are learning.
