Art
Intent
The intent of the Art curriculum at Birchen Primary Academy is to provide a broad and balanced education that inspires creativity, imagination, and cultural awareness among all our pupils. Our aim is to instill a lifelong love for the arts while developing key skills such as fine motor control, visual communication, and critical thinking. We believe that art plays a crucial role in fostering pupils' personal, social, and emotional development, encouraging them to express themselves and explore their identity.
Our curriculum is designed to expose pupils to a diverse range of artistic styles, techniques, and mediums, ensuring they have opportunities to experiment, reflect, and refine their work. We are committed to promoting cultural and historical understanding through art, celebrating the rich artistic heritage of the United Kingdom and beyond. By providing a supportive and inclusive learning environment, we strive to empower every child to reach their creative potential and develop a strong sense of artistic confidence
Implementation
The implementation of our Art curriculum is underpinned by a sequential and progressive scheme of work that builds on prior knowledge and skills, enabling pupils to develop their artistic abilities over time. We ensure that our teaching materials and resources are high quality, engaging, and culturally relevant, reflecting the diverse backgrounds and experiences of our pupils. Our lessons are carefully planned to provide a balance between teacher-led instruction and pupil-led exploration.
Through a combination of practical activities, art history studies, and exposure to professional artists, we aim to deepen pupils' appreciation for art and broaden their artistic horizons. We integrate cross-curricular links where appropriate, connecting art to subjects such as history, science, and literature to create meaningful and enriching learning experiences.
Impact
The impact of our Art provision is evident in the achievements, progress, and attitudes of our pupils towards art. Through ongoing formative assessment, feedback, and reflection, we celebrate individual development and successes of every child, nurturing a positive growth mindset and a sense of pride in their artistic accomplishments. Pupils demonstrate a growing mastery of artistic skills, techniques, and concepts, as well as an increasing ability to express themselves creatively with confidence and sensitivity. Our skills progression map supports these observations through breaking down skills the children should be developing within each year of their Art journey throughout school.
