Music
Intent:
As a school, we are passionate about music. Music plays an important and consistent part in the life of the children. As pupils progress through the school, they should develop critical skills within music, allowing them to compose and perform with an increased awareness of the steps and skills involved within this process. Children can critique and evaluate their own and others work using technical and musical vocabulary, and as a result they improve their performance and composition. We wish to give every child the opportunity to experience and enjoy music through a variety of fun and engaging opportunities.
Implementation:
Children will be given opportunities to sing across the school through singing assemblies, performances and through the Charanga scheme used during Music lessons. There will be opportunities for children to develop their singing ability and their understanding of the technical elements of singing (harmonies, scales, and different styles of singing). Music is taught weekly for at least 30 minutes as a standalone music session, in every class, as well as 30 minute weekly singing assemblies. Year 3 and 5 work with an external music specialist and have the opportunity to learn to play a ukulele (year 3) and a recorder (year 5).
We use ‘The Charanga Musical School Scheme’ to ensure that all children across the school develop in the following musical skills:
• Listening and appraising
• Singing
• Music History
• Music Theory
• Composition
• Improvisation
• Performing
Throughout a unit of work, children will work up to a final composition through the process of listening and appraising, improvising, composing and performing, which will be performed and shared to an audience of their peers.
Impact:
We expect to see:
- All children making progress with their learning within music.
- All of our children accessing music lessons and being passionate about music.
- All children able to play a musical instrument with some musicality by the time they leave BCA.
- Children developing and using the language of a musician.
- Assessing and monitoring the progress of children using the teacher assessment tool on Charanga – Plan, Do, Check, Review.
- Digitally recorded performances saved to the Charanga assessment tool to track and monitor progress throughout Music.
