Reading for Pleasure
At Birchen Coppice Academy, we dedicate time to reading for pleasure and recognise the importance of the role of teacher and adults in modelling positive reading behaviours. We promote a love of reading through:
- Reading aloud to pupils at the end of the day. Studies show that children who are read to aloud are more likely to do better in school both academically and socially.
- Teachers have a selection of core books, which they read aloud to the pupils throughout the year. This ensures that by the end of year 6, all pupils have a bank of stories that they know and have had access to a range of genres and authors.
- Teachers model their enthusiasm for books when reading at all times.
- Teachers encourage a love of reading by promoting and recommending books. As role models to the pupils, teachers model themselves as readers by discussing their own reading experiences and preferences with pupils.
- Every class has their own library that includes a range of fiction, non-fiction books including those to support the wider curriculum and poetry texts.
- We celebrate local and national reading events such as World Book Day, World Poetry and Power Word Day. In addition to this, we invite local authors in to read aloud to the children and children are able to attend after school reading clubs.
- Every class has a Reading Ambassador. These pupils are responsible for ensuring that the book area is tidy and promote the wide range of books available in their class library. They can identify a range of authors and make books recommendations to the class.
