Home School Reading
Home School Reading
In EYFS and KS1 children are given home readers matched in line with the books they are reading in their RWInc lesson. These books contain sounds the children know and focus on developing fluency. Children have access to the same books online at Oxford Owl. Home readers are changed every three days in line with the Read Write Inc teaching timetable.
As children progress and graduate from the phonics programme they move onto free readers. Free reader books are grouped into levels of increasing difficulty. We refer to this as ‘branching out’ beyond phonics. These are chapter books and increase in the amount of pages they read (developing reading stamina), level of vocabulary they include and are progressive in a variety of themes and topics. Every class has their own book area and library so that books are changed frequently and promote a love of reading.
