Week 1 - Week Beginning Monday 20th April

week 1(1)

This weeks activities are based on all Mini-beasts that you can find in your garden!

MONDAY - This term we are moving onto learning all about Minibeasts. Minibeasts are "Small creatures", so we will be learning about spiders, ladybirds, caterpillars and butterflies and many more!

Today, you will become explorers! We would like you to start to explore the different types of minibeasts there are in your garden or along your daily exercise route!
See if you can tick off the minibeast you see and then start a tally of how many of each minibeast you see on your journey!

I have attached a picture of how to make your own Magnifying glass at home, so you can really investigate what the minibeast looks like!

Happy Hunting!

TUESDAY -  Today’s task is to practise your handwriting. We are focusing on the letters β€˜h, b, r, n, m, p” this week. So you can come back to this video as many times as you like to practise these letters this week.

Parent and Carers, could you please draw some straight lines in your child’s book and then draw a β€œtree” (there is also a video to explain the tree here) on the left hand side of each line.
The tree helps the children to practise the correct size of the letters.

Strong lizard position is: lying on the floor, legs straight and together, and forearms flat on the floor and elbows bent underneath their chests to support them. Please see the picture: the lady has her arms close to her body, when you have to write you forearms would unfold and to hold the paper, this position is so important to ensure your child’s muscles and body are being supported for writing when lying down. If your child is writing at the table, please make sure they can either touch the floor or have something to put their feet flat on so that they are balanced.

WEDNESDAY - Today's task is to choose a mini-beast that you spotted on your hunt and to draw it, and then write some facts about it. You could write:

"Butterfly"
"It has 6 legs."
"It is blue, yellow and red."
"It has wings."
Parents and Carers, remember, if your child hears 1 sound at the start of words and writes it, brilliant. If your child hears 3 sounds in the word and writes them, brilliant. If they can hear most or all sounds and write them, brilliant. Please encourage your children to 1) say the word they want to write. 2) Sound out the word. 3) Identify the first sound, find it on the sound mat and write it, identify the next sound, find it on the sound mat and write it, and repeat this until they have written all of the sounds they heard. 4) Say the next word they want to write and repeat the sequence (1 - 3) again.
We can't wait to see all of your beautiful pictures and your labelling! πŸ›πŸΈπŸπŸžπŸŒπŸ¦‹πŸœπŸ¦ŸπŸ¦—πŸ¦‚πŸ•·

THURSDAY -

Good morning, today we are practising our adding skills.

Parents and Carers, Can you draw: 1 circle, an + sign, another circle and an = sign. 3 times in your child’s book (see my picture).

With your children, choose 6 mini-beasts that you saw on your hunt and tallied up. You are going to add 2 sets of mini-beast, then a different 2 sets and then the final 2 sets of mini-beast.

Your children will then draw dots in the circles to represent the amount of that mini-beast you saw. They will then add the 2 sets together by counting the dots or counting along from a number e.g. they know that there are 6 dots there, so they count on β€œ7, 8, 9.”. For the answer they can either draw the total in dots or write the number.

The main aim for in todays learning is for your child to say to number sentence e.g. β€œ3+2=5”. I have done some examples of what your children might say and each time, even if I have counted the dots, I have finished with saying the full number sentence without counting.

I really hope this explanation makes sense, if not, please contact myself or Miss Tunley. If you would like the rhymes for how to write numbers, please let me know and I can send them to you.

Have a great day! You are all doing a wonderful job!

FRIDAY - Today's task is for your children to read these captions. Your child will be at one of these levels:

  • Identifying the sounds in the words
  • Blending the sounds together
  • Reading the sounds and blending the sounds in their head
  • Re-reading the sentence after they have sounded it out. This demonstrates they have understood and remembered what they are reading.

Once your child has read the sentence, please can you ask them about what they have just read, for example:

  • What did the sentence say?
  • What do you know about (choose a word)?
  • What does (choose a word) mean?
  • Can you think of a mini-beast which reminds you of this?

By asking questions about the sentence your child has read it supports their comprehension (their understanding) of the sentence.

Please choose 3 sentences to read from Phase 2.
