The Hive: Our Vision, Purpose and Rationale
Our Vision
At Birchen Coppice Primary Academy, we believe that every child deserves to feel valued, understood and successful. The Hive has been established to provide a nurturing, inclusive and highly personalised learning environment for pupils whose needs cannot be fully met through universal classroom provision alone. The Hive reflects our commitment to ensuring that all children, regardless of their level of need, have access to a meaningful education that enables them to thrive academically, socially, emotionally and personally.
The Hive is not separate from our school community; it is an integral part of it. Pupils accessing The Hive remain members of Birchen Coppice Primary Academy and are supported to participate in the life of the school as fully as possible, with provision carefully adapted to meet their individual needs.
Why The Hive is Needed
Some pupils require a more specialised approach to learning due to significant communication and interaction difficulties, cognition and learning needs, sensory processing differences, social, emotional and mental health needs, or a combination of these factors. The primary area of need for learners at The Hive is communication and interaction. The majority of learners present with profiles characterised by differences in social communication, interaction, emotional regulation and the ability to engage meaningfully with others and their environment. This aligns closely with the SCERTS (Social Communication, Emotional Regulation and Transactional Support) framework, which recognises that effective communication and interaction are supported through the development of social communication and emotional regulation skills, alongside appropriate environmental and adult support. The Hive therefore prioritises a communication-rich, supportive approach that enables learners to develop functional communication, build relationships and participate more independently in learning and everyday experiences.
These pupils often benefit from:
- Smaller group teaching.
- Increased adult support.
- A low-arousal learning environment.
- Individualised learning programmes.
- Enhanced communication approaches.
- Explicit teaching of independence and life skills.
- Targeted support to develop social interaction and emotional regulation.
The Hive has been established to bridge the gap between mainstream classroom provision and specialist education, ensuring that children can receive the personalised support they need whilst remaining within their local mainstream school community.
Our Approach
The Hive provides a bespoke curriculum which prioritises:
Communication and Interaction
Developing pupils' understanding and use of communication through Total Communication approaches, visual supports, structured language opportunities and meaningful interactions.
Personal Development
Supporting children to build confidence, resilience, self-regulation, independence and self-advocacy skills that will enable them to access the wider world.
Preparation for Learning
Developing attention, engagement, emotional regulation and learning behaviours that support successful participation in education.
Academic Development
Delivering appropriately personalised learning pathways which recognise each pupil's starting point and celebrate progress, however small.
Independence and Life Skills
Promoting practical skills, daily living skills, community engagement and preparation for future transitions.
Sensory and Emotional Wellbeing
Providing access to sensory regulation opportunities, predictable routines and low-arousal learning environments to support emotional and physical regulation.
Inclusion at the Heart
The Hive is founded upon the principle that inclusion is about belonging, participation and achievement. Wherever appropriate, pupils will continue to access learning, enrichment opportunities, assemblies, educational visits and wider school experiences alongside their peers.
Provision is designed to be flexible and responsive. Time spent within The Hive may vary according to individual need, with personalised timetables ensuring that pupils experience both specialist support and opportunities for integration within mainstream classes.

Through The Hive, we aim to:
- Improve engagement in learning.
- Develop communication and interaction skills.
- Increase independence and self-confidence.
- Support emotional regulation and wellbeing.
- Enable pupils to achieve outcomes identified within their EHCPs and support plans.
- Strengthen relationships with families and external professionals.

- Prepare pupils for the next stage of their education and life beyond school.
Working in Partnership
The success of The Hive relies upon strong collaboration between pupils, families, school staff and external agencies. We recognise parents and carers as experts in their child and value their contribution in shaping provision and reviewing progress.
Through a shared commitment to high aspirations and personalised support, The Hive seeks to ensure that every pupil is given the opportunity to flourish and achieve their potential.
How Much Time is Spent in The Hive?
The Hive provides flexible, personalised provision based on the individual needs of each pupil. The amount of time a pupil spends accessing The Hive is determined through careful assessment of need, consultation with parents/carers and, where applicable, the outcomes identified within a pupil's Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
Some pupils may access The Hive for the majority of their school day, whilst others may have a blended timetable that combines targeted support within The Hive and learning opportunities within their mainstream classroom. Provision is reviewed regularly to ensure that each pupil receives the right level of support and that opportunities for inclusion and independence are maximised.
Who Leads the Hive?
The Hive is lead daily by a qualified teacher who is supported by the school's SENDCo and Inclusion Team, who work closely with the wider school teaching staff, support staff, families and external agencies to ensure provision meets the individual needs of pupils.
Leadership of The Hive includes:
- Strategic oversight of provision and curriculum.
- Monitoring pupil progress and wellbeing.
- Coordinating external agency involvement.
- Supporting transitions and inclusion opportunities.
- Ensuring provision is aligned to EHCP outcomes and individual needs.
- Working alongside families to review progress and next steps.
The SENDCo works closely with specialist professionals including Educational Psychologists, Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists and other external agencies to ensure provision remains responsive and evidence-informed.
The Hive exists to ensure that every child experiences success, belonging and the opportunity to become the very best version of themselves.
